Job Opportunities within the Harrington School of Communication and Media and GSLIS

1)  The Harrington School of Communication and Media is seeking two Graduate Research Assistants to assist the director with a variety of tasks including gathering information and report preparation.  These positions will require approximately six hours each week and will be compensated at a rate of $15 per hour.  Please email your resume to janice_hromi@mail.uri.edu by September 21, 2012.


2)  The Graduate School of Library and Information Studies, a department of the Harrington School of Communication and Media, is in need of two graduate students to assist in communicating the brand to prospective graduate students, current graduate students, community members, administration, faculty, and more!

The Graduate Brand Ambassadors will be responsible for becoming familiar with the graduate departments of Library and Information Studies, Communication Studies, English/Writing & Rhetoric.  They will be asked to evaluate how courses within each discipline might be successfully integrated into the other curricula and will maintain contact with accepted students while their decision to attend URI is pending.  Responsibilities will also include guiding tours, leading information sessions, representing the GSLIS department in the Student ALA meetings, and promoting the three graduate departments within the Harrington School of Communication and Media.

This position will require the successful candidates to be available approximately six hours each week and will earn a rate of $15 per hour.  Compensation will be paid in the form of a stipend at the end of each semester.

2012 November comps / December graduation

Fall comps will be held this year on Saturday, November 17, in Rodman Hall, room 109, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Students who are planning to graduate in December 2012 must submit a Nomination for Graduation form which can be found on our website: http://www.uri.edu/artsci/lsc/Academics/forms.html.  It must be clearly filled out and returned to the GSLIS Student Affairs Office prior to the deadline of Monday, September 24.

Students scheduled to take the exam are reminded to visit the GSLIS Sakai site (Student Guide).  This site offers detailed information about preparing for the comps, test taking procedures, as well as previous exams.  It's also a great opportunity to organize study groups on line and "converse" with other students through a chat room.

Anyone with disabilities should speak to their advisor so that alternate arrangements can be made for taking the exam

Please remember that an approved Program of Study is needed to graduate. If you have diverted from your original plan of study, you must contact your advisor to fill out a new form.

Summer Comps Update

Summer Comps will be next Saturday(7/14/12) in Chafee Hall, Room 244, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The room was chosen for its comfort in providing air conditioning in anticipation of a hot summer day.  While you may bring drinks and snacks, you will not be able to take any food items with you into the classroom.

Dr. Yan Ma will be proctoring the  exam.  Remember that exams and all scratch notes must be turned in at the end of the exam. 

Parking should be easy as Parking Services no longer requires passes for weekends.

MLIS Program Requirements Reduced

Requirements for the MLIS degree have been reduced from 42 to 36 credits.  Students currently in the program may choose to graduate on completion of 36 credits, but:
1.  You must still complete all required courses
2.  You must be registered for at least 1 URI credit or 1 credit hour of CRG 999 at the time you graduate.  See http://www.uri.edu/gsadmis/graduate_manual/registration.html#section440 for additional information. 
3.  The next comps exam is scheduled for July 14.  Please make sure you have submitted your Nomination for Graduation form to the Student Affairs Office as the Graduate School's deadline of June 4th is firm.
